Volunteers in their 1st and 2nd year of medical college can join the internship program where they shadow the local medical staff in attending patients and learn about the process. Internships are provided in Dental, Physiotherapy, and various other departments.

Questions & Answers

The site says "Pre-med, nursing, and medical students" and biomedical science is like a pre-med degree, so we assume the answer is yes. Contacting the program for their answer is also never a bad idea :)
Yes, you can join the program if you are a pharmacy student. Some placements also allow you to gain experience of working in a hospital pharmacy.

Cusco Medical Service

I stayed in Cusco for a month doing the medical service program. Honestly, I was surprised, but in a good here. When I came here I didn’t know what to expect, but am I glad that I applied. The family home I stayed at was excellent, they were very nice and flexible with the food and capable of accommodating to my needs. The program itself was great, the staff there are super friendly and they will allow you to participate in as many things as you feel comfortable, as well as teach you that which you do not know. I vaccinated, shadowed doctors, did triage, and more. Overall a very positive experience. I personally recommend to find a way to get in touch with as many volunteers as possible, in order to make your afternoons more enjoyable (you must do this yourself, as VolSol introduces you to the volunteers that arrive the same time you do, but not those that arrived earlier or afterwards). I did many tours which I recommend ( Laguna Huamantay, Rainbow Mountain and Machu Picchu), however I do not recommend traveling with Inca Time, I feel they are overpriced and don’t offer good enough services (or attention) for the amount of money that they ask. Finding another tour agency at the main plaza or the internet is better, and easy enough. Overall my experience was amazing, but remember that the people you meet makes up 50% of your time here.

What would you improve about this program?
In general, VolSol should try to find away to allow volunteers to get in contact with each other.

Worth it! Learned a lot

The program was truly amazing! Although, I would recommend speaking some level of spanish. You get a lot more out of it if you speak the language. The staff here was very helpful and our host family was amazing and sweet. In the weekends you can travel to many places like machupichu, huacachina, lake Titicaca, rainbow mountian, arequipa, etc. honestly there are a lot of things to do in the weekend. The placement was not a hospital, but a clinic, so there are no surgeries but you do get to learn a lot. Injections, suturing, cleaning wounds, etc. The exposure was amazing especially if you already have some medical training. Some tips include in the markets there isnt 100% alpaca, there are many good restaurants to try, and explore as much as you can! Also, bring gloves and some medical equipment because the clinics are very poor.

What would you improve about this program?
The program could be improved by maybe giving volunteers tips before going so that you dont get ripped off in peru, what restaurants are safe to consume food at, etc. Other than that it was pretty great.

Life-time experience

I'm Hussein from Egypt I joined last summer the medical volunteering program in Surin, Thailand. At first, before areiving in Thailand I felt nervous because it was my first time to travel all alone and have an internship, however, the minute I arrived I was more than welcomed by the staff and other volunteers. I enjoyed the accomdation with other volunteers to get to know eachother more and enjoyed the volunteering program itself as we used to work in a hospital and gain experience. For me, it was such a great experience because as a dental student I got to do procedures that I've never really practiced in my country, thus it was so beneficial. The staff organized everything for us including tours on weekends like the national park. I enjoyed every single thing in my 2 weeks stay and most importantly I enjoyed getting in contact with volunteers from all around the world. Thai people were amazing and so welcoming. I highly recommend students who stidy medicine, nursing or dentistry to apply for that program because it will enhance your academic level and also will give you the opportunity to make new friends and learn more about new cultures. I believe people have to joing such programs in order to get out of their comfort zones and experience new challanges that will definitely change their lives.

What would you improve about this program?
I think it can be improved by increasing the volunteering destinations in order to have a wider reach and get everyone from around the world to know about this amazing program.

Experience of a lifetime!!!

Extremely great program, lovely people and the most exciting 2 weeks of the entire year. I have volunteered in a ER (Takook health promoting hospital) clinic in Surin, Thailand during 15.08-30.08.2014 where I have achieved a certificate for completing a basic training -practising dressing wounds;injections and vaccinations within the local community. The experience was incredible as the healthcare team were extremely eager to train you and allow you to see many patients. Also the project coordinators were incredibly fun and full of ideas how to entertain us during our leisure time. The entire group of volunteers bonded very well, especially during nights out in Bangkok and the trip to the jungle - Khoa Yai National Park. One of the highlights was the trip to the elephant village where we got to ride the elephants and see a lovely elephants show.

Response from Volunteering Solutions

Thank you Nicoleta for your kind words, we are glad that you found this opportunity incredible and rewarding. We always welcome our past volunteers with open arms. Hope to see you again soon :)
